Girl, interrupted

Barbie* , a no-nonsense middle manager, is married with four kids. She’s a respected career woman who highly regards professionalism, ethics, and fairness in her work. Albeit conservative, she works on keeping up with the sign of times as she juggles time permanently working in a premier institution and providing for and taking care of her family. Barbie also provides ample time to her husband to fulfill the duties of a loving wife. But it seems that she fails to adequately perform the sexual predilections of him.

Rarely do the issues of sex and sexual intimacy stimulate Barbie’s marriage. Her husband introduces her to modern sexual activities, to her disgust. She is after all tight to religiosity. While it makes sense to at least try, Barbie just cannot grasp sexual deviance. Her husband’s disappointment would often translate to revulsion and unqualified tendencies to hit her. And she took it all in.

Sexual division of labor

Women subjugation not only applies to oppressed women without means of income anymore, they also occur even to employed women of great power and stature. It was argued that portions of personal freedom like socio-economic autonomy provide women to recapture their self-worth as consequence of repressive sexual division of labor. If there are alternative ways presented and women are able to fill in what is expected of their duties because of it, a woman acquires human identity. However, there exists a large segment of women suppressed of sexual gratification or worse, subjected to lopsided sexual exercise by partners, despite determination of own power standardized by male society.

Married women are often victims of these types of sexual torture, especially when dictated by male power and persuasion. It was concluded in many studies how a biased socio-economic independence determines a male-dominated household: the man, as he chiefly provides for the family, is endowed with authority that often leads to asymmetrical view on women. As patriarchal society grew, it diminishes a greater understanding of a woman’s needs and wants, the slowly downgrading of women to an inferior sex, and the banishment of a woman’s human dignity.

What seems to be perpetually present in this society is rough end on women to constantly prove themselves to be respected, but forced to submit to inferiority when male pre-eminence is threatened. This unfair determination of women subjugation in society empowers the male perspective, and in turn gets accepted by vast majority. The assertion that women is binding to feeble roles further reasons that a male-dominated society is inept and unable to co-exist with entities that might be actually better than them. Also if a female rejects liberal sexuality, she’s deemed old-fashioned, outdated, and impractical. But if she subscribes to atypical sexual activities, she’s proclaimed a whore outright. The prejudice in this thinking defines greatly the inequality between the two sexes, far beyond the time when women were finally allowed to vote and female presidents and leaders were elected around the globe. One wonders if society has evolved all along.

Women of today are starting to take hold its rightful place, not against but equal and side by side with men, in the reevaluation of sexual egalitarianism. But struggles abound: there will surface, both new and old, derogatory instances in the saga of sexual inequalities; institutional inaptness; and massive female suppression, while imprinted in all aspects of human behavior, are almost impossible to upend. But as how women are innately responsive, she will stand against all forms of repression while maintaining an upright disposition to correct those which are caused by them.
